Maine 04330The Way We Get Byby Aron GaudetWe are hosting a lunch and learn session for Maine State Government employees. The session will feature a volunteer from the Maine Troop Greeters, a nonprofit organization of Veterans and community members who welcome U.S. service members arriving at and departing from Bangor International Airport. This is the group that is the focus of the documentary we would like to screen. The session will begin with the Emmy-nominated PBS film The Way We Get By, which highlights the Troop Greeters and the profound impact of their service. A Maine Troop Greeters volunteer will then share a 15-minute presentation about the organization’s history, mission, experiences greeting service members, and the meaning of this unique tradition of community service. The session will conclude with facilitated audience Q&A and conversation.

Wisconsin 53716American Seamsby Carly JakinsThe September conversation will feature the PBS POV short film American Seams followed by Special Guest Speaker Molli Pauliot, a member of the Ho-Chunk Nation, Buffalo Clan. Conversation will be faciliated by Angela Johnson, professional artist, creativity coach, and educator. The film will be screened at the start of the program and can be viewed ahead of time at the PBS POV website for American Seams. There is no reading ahead of the September discussion. About the film: American Seams explores the stories of three women quilters whose lives complement and contrast each other across stunning landscapes in rural Colorado, Utah, and the Navajo Nation of New Mexico. Filmmakers Carly Jakins and Jared Jakins premiered this short film in November 2024. About the Speaker: Molli Pauliot will share about her experience with Ho-Chunk quilting traditions as a maker and educator. Molli Pauliot is a member of the Ho-Chunk Nation, Buffalo clan. She has professional experience on collaborative projects with tribal, county, state, and federal officials addressing critical social needs in Wisconsin. Her research interests are in Native American populations in the Great Lakes Region, material culture, Native American art, museum anthropology, indigenous resilience, climate change, and US American Indian policy. She is an accomplished designer and bead worker. About Textitles: Textitles is a free monthly discussion group for readings, watchings, and listenings (books, films, and podcasts) on textile and fiber art with a focus on historical, social, economic, and environmental concerns related to fibers, fabrics, makers/artists, techniques, use, value, and more. This discussion group is facilitated and sponsored by the Textile Arts Center of Madison with a different topic to read, view, or listen to, typically on your own before the discussion. As possible, some copies of book titles selected will be available for checkout through the Madison Public Library; however, in some instances participants will need to procure access to the media on their own. Conversations take place in the Pinney Library Reading Room, featuring the inspiring permanent art installation titled Us, Midwest created by local artist Yeonhee Cheong. Please register for each conversation you wish to attend at the TAC website. About the facilitator: Angela Johnson is a professional artist, creativity coach and educator based in Wisconsin. She earned a master’s in Art Education, an MA in Art and an MFA with a focus in photography from the University of Wisconsin-Madison. Her areas of artistic expertise include: Art Journaling, Alternative photo processes, Bookmaking and box making, and Creativity Coaching.
