This event is organized by the Chicago DSA and PUSO Chicago. When Jennifer Laude, a Filipina trans woman, is brutally murdered by a U.S. Marine, three women intimately invested in the case–an activist attorney (Virgie Suarez), a transgender journalist (Meredith Talusan) and Jennifer’s mother (Julita “Nanay” Laude)–galvanize a political uprising, pursuing justice and taking on hardened histories of US imperialism. We will have a political discussion around this movie about US imperialism, gender under colonialism and how it relates to people in the US. With the 250th anniversary of the Declaration of Independence, I would like to discuss the public American memory and who decides what/who will be memorialized and why. Each event in the series will begin with an introduction by staff and include a related book display with recommended reads for multiple ages.
